About American Outdoor Schools

ABOUT AOS

American Outdoor Schools was founded in 1985 to compliment the school system by providing high quality outdoor education programs that emphasize our responsibility towards the natural environment.

Curriculum for fifth through eighth grades is taught by our instructors from a stewardship perspective.

GOALS

  • To study science concepts in the outdoor classroom.
  • To develop awareness and appreciation for the natural environment.
  • To develop a sense of responsibility and cooperation through group living and learning.

CURRICULUM

Natural science and environmental education topics included are from the disciplines of biology, geology, astronomy, zoology, botany, ecology, conservation, nature study, and outdoor recreation skills.

AVAILABILITY

American Outdoor Schools operates from September through the middle of June. We offer 3, 4 and 5-day programs starting with dinner on the first day through lunch on the last day.

American Outdoor Schools provides an experienced teaching staff with an appropriate academic background and an enthusiasm for working with students.  The AOS staff handles the evening programs as well as the curriculum and is provided on a ratio of one instructor for every 20 students.  The school provides adult counselors on a ratio of one counselor to every 8-10 students.

COMMENT

“The academic content was of a very high level, challenging and enriched by references to practical application of knowledge. The schedule was very appropriate and balanced. [It was] reaffirmation that outdoor education’s benefits to students extend well beyond “academia” to socio-emotional, mental and spiritual health of all those involved.”
